In addition today\u2019s universities are more and more competing with each other for attracting international scholars and students alike. Two aspects therefore become increasingly important: On the one hand the ability to present and to discuss academic research in English and on the other hand to confidently teach in English to a growing inter-cultural group of students who are most frequently non-native speakers.<\/p>\n<p>This shortcut-workshop is designed to address and raise awareness of specific challenges for teaching and learning science at university level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dealing with language barriers<\/li>\n<li>Motivating and activating students to participate in English<\/li>\n<li>Importance of verbal and non-verbal communication when teaching in English<\/li>\n<li>Specific challenges for preparation and design of presentations, teaching sequences and complete courses in English<\/li>\n<li>Formulating objectives for teaching in English<\/li>\n<li>Different roles of a teacher: Inter-cultural aspects of feedback and supervision<\/li>\n<li>Cooperation and collaboration of students, e.g. in laboratory courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The workshop will focus on actual topics and experiences of the participants and will put special emphasis on practical exercises and simulations. Please have an example from your field of teaching at hand which can be introduced to the other participants. However, the focus might be just on parts or specific aspects of your example. The workshop will be held completely in English. A major aim therefore is to help overcome language barriers and to feel at ease when teaching in English.
